This year's theme is discovery and mentoring, and it almost seems to go without saying. ASWA’s mission "… is to enable women in all accounting and related fields to achieve their full personal, professional and economic potential [discovery], and to contribute to the future development of their professions [mentoring]."
The Bay Area now has three chapters of ASWA. Our long-time friends and neighbors in San Francisco and the newly chartered East Bay chapter in San Ramon. We will have opportunities to meet at the annual Angel Island picnic hosted by San Francisco on October 2, and a Holiday party co-hosted by all three chapters in December.
Our annual ASWA/AWSCPA Joint National Conference (JNC) will be held in Nashville September 27-29, 2010, which allows us to connect or re-connect with members from across the country as well as see our organization at work at the annual business meeting. Add to this varied, great-value CPE; country music and riverboats and it is easy to say yes to JNC!
Closer to home, we will be working hard to improve our communication to members through various technology improvements and a new website coming soon.
The discovery will continue with our upcoming chapter programs which include such hot topics as International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) and Health Care Reform. Technical programs will include perennial favorites Excel Masters, tax updates, and the “soft” topics of managing in the 21st century, mentoring, time management and career development.
ASWA and the Silicon Valley chapter have long been committed to mentoring. This is probably most obviously represented by the financial scholarships our chapter provides to local accounting students, but also by our relationships within the chapter. Members of longer standing are quick to welcome new members and guests, board members are mentored by those who are current but “veteran” board members and by those same long-term members who have often held a variety of board positions in previous years. It is an honor to have their leadership and guidance.
So as we begin this new year, please welcome the new board and new members and learn more about longer-term members who have so much to offer all of us.
